Journals

Claire Burnett, a college student that went with us to Uganda, came up with a creative fund-raising idea. TH volunteers are making very unique journals and selling them for $20 each. 100% of the proceeds go directly for the construction of the orphanage. Please let me know if you are interested. Purchase one for a friend or family member because many people appreciate getting a gift within a gift - everybody benefits this way. The journals can be custom made just for you. For more information on the journals please go to: myspace.com/thinkhumanity

"Making these journals allows me to put a little of myself into a part of someone else's life. Helping Think Humanity is important to me because it's a local group creating global change." - Jessica Ryan, oneintwenty

"Journals are a way for me to escape my daily life and take a deep breath. Yes it can get frustrating with all the cutting and gluing, but to know that I'm saving lives by simply spending my time doing something I love...it makes it completely worth it!!" - Caitlyn Clinton, TH volunteer

Africa Bags, Inc. is a non-profit corporation focused on creating economic opportunity in the African country of Malawi. By selling cloth grocery bags made in Malawi, we will provide a sustainable income opportunity for its residents. Additionally, use of these bags will diminish the need for environmentally hazardous plastic grocery bags.

The Africa Bags will be for sale with the Think Humanity logo on one side and the Africa Bags logo on the other. Please purchase in support of both organizations as well as to help the environment.
The bags are $12 each. If you donate $15 for a bag - the extra $3 will go towards the education of Mumbele, a 6 year old orphan who we are raising money for - see under the "How to Help" section for more information.

"GET YOUR GOAT PROJECT " - $20 EACH

boywithgoats.jpg picture by bheckel

"Get Your Goat Project" $20 a Goat!

We need 100 goats! Why 100 goats? The money from this project will support many activiites and help support the operating costs of the orphanage.
Think Humanity together with the COBURWAS EDUCATE CLUB, (a group of refugee students representing the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Sudan) are working on an orphanage project in the Kyangwali Settlement Camp in western Uganda. Think Humanity and the COBURWAS Club came up with the idea to sustain the orphans by:
1) raising and selling many goats, thereby earning money for operating costs for the orphanage;
2) using the goats as a food source; and
3) teaching the children to care for a goat. They will look after it and when it produces each will remain with a kid to sell.
These refugees are displaced due to wars in their surrounding countries. Many are orphaned as a result of war and disease. Hopefully you will support this project with your $20 donation. Donors will be mentioned on this website and in the monthly newsletter.

MUMBELE FUND

A young boy, age 6 years named Mumbele, has no mother. She died last year. His father is near death. Lisa Jacquay, from Passion Africa, has offered to help raise money for Mumbele so that he can get an education, clothing, food, soap and other basic needs. Mumbele has chiggers living under his toenails (see photo) and this is partly due to living conditions in the refugee camp. He sleeps in a mud hut on a dirt floor. He needs a bed, mattress, good shoes, socks, and medication.  Lisa provided him with new clothes (see photo) and this is a beginning. Here is an excerpt from the journal of Claire Burnett, who accompanied Think Humanity on our June 2008 trip:

A 6 year old boy named Mumbele stands at the door of his mud hut in the refugee camp. He finds hope when donated new clothing.

The second dark toe on the right is infected with chiggers.

"Poverty slaps me in the face as we visit a home the next day. Why can I not grasp this? I stand here with my camera as my new brother Benson translates the story of this little orphan's life. His name is Mumbele. He is six. His dirty clothes hang from his malnourished body. His legs and feet are cut and infected. He looks down, doesn't smile. Has never smiled. But then Mumbele gets a new set of clothes from Think Humanity, some gifts from a donor, and a promise for a net at distribution the next day. Mumbele smiles for the first time in his life, and my heart breaks. It is all real now. I can't hold back the tears so I put on my sunglasses and walk to the road to try and collect myself. Why? Really why? Why is that not me? Smiled for the first time in his life? Wow. An ounce of hope." -Claire Burnett

Note: For $300 TH can provide a quality education, which includes: living in a dormitory out of the refugee camp, food, uniform, tuition, books, medication and transportation to and from a school 50 miles away.

Purchase an Africa Bag for $15 and $3 will go towards the Mumbele's education. Thank you.

Special thanks to the Jacquays, Matthew Connelly, Jill Vesty, Tim Horst, Elizabeth Davis and Sandra Henderson for donations to Mumbele.

HopeHub
Here's a wonderful way to give a gift within a gift. It's called HopeHub, where you can shop online and donate half of the commissions generated from the purchase to Project Meds and Nets.

HopeHub includes more than 200 of the most popular online retailers and allows shoppers to choose from a charity.

HopeHub was founded by two Boulder sisters, Melissa Richards and Katy Richards, after their mom suffered a brain injury at age 49. The women gave up their legal careers to take care of their mother. In doing so, they met many people who were also in need. They decided to band together and to create the Web site for these people.

Think Humanity...
PROJECT MEDS AND NETS was established to help refugees from war-torn countries in the fight against malaria.  Malaria continues to be the leading cause of death among refugees.  They are more susceptible to severe malaria in high risk areas where they are unable to get basic health services, are without adequate nutrition or clean water, shelter or sanitation. By lacking access to health care and malaria prevention tools the disease continues to spread at epidemic levels. One million children die unnecessarily each year from this disease.  Join us in the fight against malaria.  With your support we can provide anti-malarial medication and insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease.
